How do I start to build my credit history?

How To Start Establishing Credit

The key to establishing credit is to start small and build from there. If you have little or no credit history, the odds are not in favor of you getting approved for a $15,000 credit card limit or getting a good deal on a mortgage.

Start by applying for a few basic credit cards. Often these cards are geared toward students trying to start their own credit history. Your limits might only be a couple hundred dollars to start. The easiest cards to get approved for are usually store cards like clothing chains and department stores.

When you get approved and receive the card, start by using them each month for a small amount. Then pay it off in full when your statement comes in the mail. Do not spend more on the card than you can afford to pay off. The idea is to establish a history of making payments in full and on time, showing that you are a reliable customer.

As your payments are made on time and your history builds, creditors will most likely offer increased credit limits and lowered interest rates. As this continues monitor your credit score by obtaining a free credit report online or in the mail. You will notice that you begin to qualify for better cards with more benefits and better limits. Then, when you are ready to finance a car, apply for a private loan or buy a house, things will go a lot smoother for you.
