Safely Checking Your Credit Report

When checking your credit report, whether you do it online or request the hard copy file, remember that the information in there is private and not something you want everyone else to see. This means that you should read the report in private as well. Do not use a public computer at a library to read your credit report, and do not take your laptop outside of your home to read it either. Check your credit score and report in the privacy of your own home where others are not likely to see it. If you requested the hard copy, do not carry it around town with you and read it on the bus or subway. The 3 credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are meant for your eyes, not your neighbor’s or the person sharing a bus stop bench with you. The more thoughtful you are when it comes to protecting your information the less likely it is that someone else will be able to access it and use it to damage your credit score.
