Do you keep your credit report secure once you receive it?

Getting & Protecting Your Credit Report

If you want to get a free credit report, you can go straight to the source and request one from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are all required to give you one report for free every 12 months. They will usually have a button on their Web site that says “order credit report” or something to a similar effect.

When you do get your credit report, it is important to keep that information safe and secure. Do not leave it lying around where others can see your personal financial information. Do not leave the report in your backpack unattended in the library while you look for a book. If someone steals your bag, they now have a lot of information that can do damage to your credit.

The best thing to do is keep the report on file in a secure location in your home. If you do throw the file out after reading it, make sure to run it through a paper shredder. Do not just throw the document whole into a trash bin. Someone can still easily find it.
